Local businesses come together to give unemployed young people interview experience.
This week representatives from Coventry Building Society, Apex Hotels, Thrings, GLL Sports Centre Bath, Bath Rugby, and Bath Rugby Foundation came to The Rec to put our HITZ students through their paces, conducting professional interviews. Our HITZ students were suited and booted and the speed interviews were conducted just like the real deal.
HITZ is the UK’s largest rugby union social inclusion programme. Almost 1.1m young people in the UK are not in education, employment or training. Just over half (53.6%) are looking for work. Without action, we risk losing a whole generation to a cycle of unemployment, disillusionment and disengagement.
Using the ethos of rugby as a vehicle, HITZ develops grit, tenacity and perseverance – vital in the world of work. Our specialist coaches capitalise on rugby’s ability to remove barriers, build trust and increase confidence to set students on the path to success. HITZ also responds to the crisis of physical inactivity amongst disadvantaged and vulnerable young people. 90% of students completing the course improve their numeracy, literacy and IT skills. At least 75% take on further education, employment, training, work placements or apprenticeships. The programme also gives students a qualification – a level 1 diploma in Sport and Active leisure.
Our HITZ students are now two thirds of their way through their course and are reaching their work skills module, where they focus on the employability skills and being work ready on completion of HITZ. Our qualified coaches have been helping the students to fine tune their CVs, prepare for mock interviews and secure work experience placements.
Luke, HITZ student said, “Before HITZ I don’t think I was a very good person. I was moody all the time and now I’m always smiling. I know I want to be a plasterer and now I feel like I know how I can go out that get that job – and that’s thanks to HITZ. Today has been really good. It’s improved my confidence.”
Emma from Coventry Building society said, “It’s been brilliant to come down here today and meet some of the young people on the HITZ programme. Coventry Building Society have been supporting the Foundation for a number of years via our Bath Rugby Infinity accounts, but coming here and meeting the students brings it all to life. They have all done such a great job and I was really inspired by their stories. One of the students, Josh, said he wants to be a netball coach, and I am a netball coach in my spare time! So I’m going to help him to gain some more experience in that. I’m delighted to support such a wonderful charity – I’m even running the Bath Half for them!”
