On Thursday 19th January, Bath Rugby Foundation hosted one of its regular Friends of the Foundation evenings. The event saw representatives from numerous Bath businesses meet at legal firm, Thrings in Queens Square to hear from the Foundation about their employability programmes.
9% of UK teenagers aged 16-18 are NEET (not in education, employment or training). With students now obliged to stay in education or training until 18, many are pushed towards further education despite not enjoying school. Being NEET puts significant pressure on both the student and the parents. Young people lose confidence, and struggle to find routes out of the spiral.
Bath Rugby Foundation’s employability programmes are designed to enable participants to stand up, step out of the cycle and get back into employment or training. The programmes use rugby to create team spirit and build confidence. This is matched with tailored sessions to build work skills – from creating C.V.s to work experience in local businesses. Some of our participants will gain Maths, English and Sports qualifications whilst they are with us, enabling them to move forward with their new found skills.
Halena Coury, Events Manager, explains, “Our employability programmes rely on our links with fantastic local businesses to offer work experience opportunities. We want to invite all of our business friends together to hear from some of our students who have come through our employability programmes and changed their lives – but also to meet some students still on their journey. These young people are inspiring – and our hope was that businesses will be encouraged to offer interviews, CV workshops or work experience within their organisation. We are overwhelmed with the offers of support from financial firms, to food companies, to hotels and restaurants. It’s been a brilliant evening – both for the Foundation and for the young people we can now offer very special work experiences to”.
Thank you to everyone who attended the event. If you would like to offer work experience to one of our young people, please get in touch and email Caryl.Thomas@BathRugby.com
